Craigslist—“1 very old dresser, falling apart. A good project for someone to put back together. $20”
I thought it would be a fun project and negotiated $10 because the listing was so old now.
I found my way out to his country farm to pick it up. It had been stored in a pole shed/barn. It was ROUGH. And an animal had peed in it. O.M.G.
Did I say ROUGH? I thought I’d die from the smell getting it home.

This was all the end of June. It’s been parked on the driveway this whole time. In the sun. In the rain. Constantly getting “aired” out.
It STILL stinks.
REEKS, actually.
HowE V E R. . . .it now has this aMAZing crackled finish! AND authentic glass knobs!
I decided to just DEconstruct the whole piece—there is NO WAY I’m putting this stinky thing back together. And WHO would buy it? Yikes!
I remembered this happening to me a couple of years ago on a missing drawer dresser. I had to seal it inside and out…every surface to get the stink to go away…after I rebuilt it. Never again!

It is lovely, but, maybe it becomes an outdoor piece, perhaps a potting bench? I would get an old little kids pool and fill it with hot water and any combination of the following: bleach, lemon oil, cinnamon, charcoal, vinegar, baking soda, borax, dryer sheets and OdoBan. We used OdoBan on items we were able to salvage after our house burned down. Amazing stuff. Soak it for awhile and let it sun dry. Then seal away. Before and after you build. Salvage gets away from you every time. It’s like fighting a windmill.

Home Depot carries OdoBan,

and I think WalMart too.
Best of luck. I just read your Oh Boy, 2. You have a soft heart. Clearly $45 was delusional as it was only destined to be stored in some other relatives’ dark corner, and eventually the fire-pit. The trouble is we always feel we have to redeem a questionable decision. “Take what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.”

I love all of the creative ideas and fun you have even if you don’t think it is fun sometimes. I use Odoban for my pet areas, and I get it at Home Depot. You can get it in liquid, spray and solid room freshners that I know of.
