I decided to soften this Provençal-styled bed frame with upholstery.
I’ve always had an uncanny ability to visualize the END product/project even before beginning!
And what I could SEE for this was grain sack cloth.
For the TEXTURE and the CONTRADICTION!
But I didn’t have enough left—oh, poo.
What I DID have plenty of was an unusually-textured, UNtraditional damask in a neutral color. ~And with that decision made I needed to address solidifying the frame for upholstery.
I could cut, upholster, and inset a piece of ¼” plywood that would maintain the outer frame design or I could wrap right over the frame and I chose the latter FOR THIS REASON.
The frame is 56″ wide -a Full size. However, wrapping the fabric OVER the frame will make it look biGGer and it could be used with a queen-sized bed!
*There’s a 2″ discrepancy on each side -full frame to queen mattress- that becomes reduced by padding and fabric. In past design jobs I’ve secured blocks to the under side of the queen box-spring to ride in the bed-rails and keep it all in place. I don’t think anyone ever figured out the mis-match!
I used furniture webbing to keep the padding from falling through the frame, but I didn’t have enough to weave a horizontal line. When I run to the fabric store for backing/liner I’ll restock webbing and can still weave a strip through from the back side before it’s closed in. The extra securing will prevent any push-through when leaning against the headboard.
This is exciting to see because it’s such an improvement on a dated piece of furniture. Can’t wait to see the outcome!

It’s creepy how much you and I think alike. I tell people that I can absolutely see what stuff looks like when it’s finished … I just have to do whatever I can to make it look like the picture that’s in my head. It can be hard to work with contractors who don’t have access to the depths of my imagination, but it works for me.
I hope this thing flies out of your shop!

Great minds think alike Connie! Someone once left me a comment that she wished she could open the top of my head and take a look inside! ME TOO!
