I found this old gutted sewing cabinet in a thrift store more than a year ago. I thought it was interesting and had some potential–but I already had a loooong project list so it got back-burnered.
Well, it’s time has come.
I would’ve liked to come up with some crazy, off the wall design–but I need some quick projects for the antique mall so the easy thing to do was a bench (and they sell well for me).
- I detached the top and
- removed the front apron, and marked its new lower location,
- then I set the table saw fence to cut off the cabinet’s top 8″.
- I reattached the apron and added corner blocking for more support to the new seat.
Super easy-peasy.
I sanded the whole piece, dry-brushed it, gave it another light sanding, and dark waxed it.
Then I began working on the upholstered seat~which all hinges on good padding and some burlap.

Super fast and ready to go!
~don’cha’ luv when that happens!
