O-m-g! How I LUV shield back chairs!
Yes, I know– More. Chairs. My weakness.
St Vinnie’s ½ price sale was this morning!
$15 $7.50 each!
There’s a particular project I’ve been wanting to do for a while requiring 3 chairs. But until now, I just haven’t found the right candidates!
I love the uncommon design of this shield–which presents the 1st dilemma.
To upholster the shield backs, or leave them exposed–??
So, here’s what I want to do— join these 3 chairs together making a banquette!
And I would love your help designing it!
Here, just out of the car and lined up to show you–the Head Chair will be demo’d into parts for this project. And, I’d like to re-use the arms.
_______________________________________________
#1. A straight line, 3 seat style.
A straight line presents much like a “sofa,” and I could reconnect the arms to the outsides–they’re clamped in place in this picture. It will have 4 front legs.
#2. With a slight curve, no arms.
#3. The same slight curve, with arms.
#4. A tight curve, without arms— 2 seats.
#5. Tight curve, with arms.
Higher view to better show the curve (the former seats set in place for visual). I’ll probably adjust the center shield back height, and there will ultimately be only 3 front legs.
So what do you think?
Which way should I go?
Catherine
I’m sharing this project with these really great blogs!
Well, I’m going to be no help here because they would all look great. However, if I were buying it for myself, I would want it straight because there are several places I could use a straight bench- end of bed for one.

You and I think alike! I have two arm chairs that are broken that a client gave me, they are in the furniture cube waiting to be made into a bench, but yours is wayyyyy cooler. I am definitely voting for #3. Although I love the look of chairs made into a bench, (doing one myself), I have yet to see the curved look. You gotta go with this one and start a new trend.

I like arrangement #1 the best. I think it will be easier to place in a room without the curve. I really like all the selections, but thinking how I might use such a bench…..I find that the straight approach would work almost anywhere! Now………….if you have a bay or something that this bench plans to reside….I would rethink that decision. But for general use I think #1 would work the best:D That is my 2 Cents worth….LOL!

They all look nice but I think I prefer #2. Can’t wait to see this finished!

I live the one with the arms on the end. Oh, I can’t wait to see what it will look like!!

The tight curve with slightly adjusted arm (pointing outside instead of center) woule look absolutely awesome.

Great idea. I like the straight bench, or maybe the tight curve. Depends where you want to put it. But as far as upholstering the back? No way. Maybe you could make a comfy loose bolster.

I like three because the arms are still on

I like #1 as it will be more adaptable to various rooms. Definitely do NOT upholster the back. One or two loose pillows, but you want that detail to be available.

#1 becuase I would use it for extra seating and more people could use it comfortably without knees touching. I think it would also be easier to place in a home. Don’ t upholster the back! The shield makes it more interesting.

I was about to say the EXACT same thing as Katherine! While the curve LOOKS COOL and ohsounique, it’s just not practical. The first thing I tought was whomever sat with me is gonna get kicked in the shins when I cross my legs! AND not everyone wants to sit THAT CLOSE to another person, ‘The space between’ COULD BE made into a raised ‘table top’ to set drinks and snacks on! Either as part of the actual construction of the item, OR just build a separate ‘tray’ that fits there, but can be removed if wanted.

Nice project ! Number 3, for me, with a sort of tray in the middle part which would join the two chairs and be useful + the two persons seated would not be that close to each other … Anyway, you will find and show us something great, I am really sure of that ! I enjoy very much your website ♥

I’m afraid that I’m late to the party, but I like the straight line WITH the arms on each side. SO pretty! Ooops! That’s number 1.

This idea is so stinkin’ cool! I love how you deconstructed the chairs and are totally thinking outside the proverbial box. Since you asked, I vote for #1.

I vote for the straight one, too. Good point about the legs not having room with the curved designs, although they are interesting.

Very cool idea!! My vote goes to the straight bench. I love the way the legs line up. Very easy on the eye.

I vote #3, and I wouldn’t cover the backs. They are so pretty, and it would be nice to have a little nod to the chair’s original form. Visiting from the Cowgirl up Party and glad I did!

Love those shield chairs. I so wish I had them. I don’t know what to say, I like the curve, love the softness ti can bring to the chairs. Can’t wait to see how they turn out, but you do such incredible work they will be beautiful. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday’s Best Par.tay!

I love Shield Back chairs… I’ve never seen them made into a bench, so I can’t wait to see yours. I have seen them upholstered on the backrest side, so the back of the chair still shows the shield, and the backrest part of the chair is cushioned and upholstered… It looked pretty, but I’m not sure how they did it?
beautiful chairs… amazing buy!!!!!

Although I think that the idea of rotating the chairs into a semi-circle is quite clever, I prefer #1 – the three chairs in a straight row. It reminds me of “Pride and Prejudice” where the three sisters sit in a row while Mr. Bingley awaits an opportunity to see Miss Bennett alone so that he can ask for her hand in marriage!

Omgosh–I never thought anyone would pick up on that!
That’s the root of this project! And gives you an idea of how long I’ve been wanting to do it and looking for the right chairs!
Wow–you’re good!

Love the tight curve without arms if you have a place for it. Otherwise I have to agree that the straight bench is most practical. I found you on It’s so very Cheri’s linky party and I’m your newest follower. I hope you can drop by Moose Mouse Creations and maybe follow me too!

For general use I’d do #1, for elegant use #3, I do like the idea of a center place to put drinks down. PLEASE do not upholster the backs, that’s what caught my eye & looks the best. If I saw this in a retail spot, I’d be drooling over the sexy backs & would have to give them a good home.

I like #1 and #3 the best because you keep the arms. The curve is great but I wonder if it is practical for two people to sit on. Thanks for joining the Open House party. Hugs, Sherry

I like slight curve with arms best. However, the straight with arms would be very nice to use at a dining room table – so probably most marketable. Nice idea!
