Well, it used to be a mirror–
but, no longer. . . .
On a trip home to take care of some business (while I’m out of state with family), I very excitedly made the rounds to ALL my favorite places~that I have seriously missed!
It was in one of those stores that I spied just a glimmer of something–behind something else. And I had to see what it was. . . !
So I started shifting things.
Just enough to know ~
jackpot!
jACKpot!
I chased up to the front of the store for the owner to find out—
“What’s up with that “hidden” piece…?”
This was its sad story.
Besides her fabulous antiques, vintage, and consignment shop, she also handles Estate Sales–from which came this “mirror.”
hER gUYs– knocked over this exPENSive beauty,
breaking it into a ca’zillion pieces :’ ∫ Uh-oh. . .
Almost 6ft tall, the frame was hand carved, and the mirror (she said) had a deep bevel that followed all the contours of the frame.
“O. m. g. . . .and they —gUlp– broke it. . ?”
Yes. She had to eat it buy it from the estate sale. She didn’t know what to do with it. She certainly couldn’t afford to put another mirror back in it. So she leaned the frame against the wall staging a new vignette in front of it. Burying it– “Out of Sight, Out of Mind.”
I had this immediate idea,
and negotiated a good price for it!
She thought I was nuts, & I admit I kept unusually quiet about what I had in mind–I was scared she’d change her mind and keep it!
And here it is!
I re-cut the frame, creating “dog-ears” (the white lines-and-the blue lines you see), which narrowed the width to a queen-size bed, and shortened it a bit too! I used ¼” plywood to make a new backboard, and then sent it off to my favorite mother-daughter upholsterers. Jane and Katie do inCREDible work ~and I know when to let the experts do it!
Initially, I wanted to use linen or hemp, but the ladies suggested this fabric—which I think gives a little extra texture with/in those tufts!
I’ll add large bun feet to boost it off the floor–something like these. . . .
I’ll build a box-frame/rails (to support the mattresses) and add bun feet to the foot~end to coordinate.
–I see I will need to putty some loosened joints in the frame, and then wax it, for added dimension.
Because the new “frame” is so heavy, I’ll mount it on the wall using a French cleat, and secure the box frame to it.
What do you think?!? I can’t wait to use it!

I’m sharing this project with these linky parties!

Catherine I hope they become family heirlooms that you give to your daughter or son some day. But they are yours to do whatever you want. If you do choose to use them in your home maybe you’ll send me and Tobi a photo of their space.

I want it too Cathy!
See why I was sooo quiet with the owner while I was trying to buy it? I haven’t shown it to her yet–she may be reluctant to sell me any future boo-boo’s.
